Tom Collins: from bar prankster to marketing sensation
The year is 1874 and we are in the city of New York. It's a hot summer day and the successful bartender John Collins is working in the bar "The Grand Union Hotel". Some of his guests asked him for a refreshing drink for the hot day.
John Collins chose a combination of gin, lemon juice, sugar and soda water and served the drink in a tall glass with lots of ice. Guests loved the refreshing and delicious drink and asked John Collins the name of the drink.
Collins, making something up on the spot, called the drink "Tom Collins" and told the guests that it was a man named Tom Collins who had spoken badly about them. He had just heard a rumor that Tom Collins was in the bar next door and was gossiping about them.
The guests, becoming curious, asked the neighboring bar about Tom Collins and were told that this man does not exist. John Collins then explained his joke and the guests loved the idea of naming a drink after a fictional person.
This is how Tom Collins was born and quickly spread to bars and restaurants in the USA and later in Europe. To this day, the Tom Collins is a classic in the world of cocktails and is enjoyed by many cocktail lovers.
