1. Story time

The history of the Moscow Mule is closely linked to the history of vodka in America. Vodka first became known in America thanks to the Moscow Mule.

And how exactly did this come about?

Smirnoff brand vodka was originally produced in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century. Due to the historical events of that time, the distillery, which was then called Smirnow, was forced to leave the country. The owners first tried to build new distilleries in Paris and Istanbul. However, due to the Great Depression, they were forced to sell the newly renamed Smirnoff brand to entrepreneurs in America.

Moscow Mule: originally just a marketing idea

Since vodka was virtually unknown in America at the beginning of the 1940s, the new entrepreneurs had to come up with special marketing. To do this, they sat down with representatives of new types of ginger lemonades and developed the now famous Moscow Mule. The trademark of this new drink was already the stylish stainless steel cups in which it was served.

Thanks to the Moscow Mule, ginger beer and Smirnoff Vodka were able to establish themselves in America and eventually made their way to Europe.

2. Bar utensils for mixing the Moscow Mule:

This drink is easy to mix as no special bartending skills are required. When it comes to this drink, we always go for the classic version. Of course, there will also be some bartenders who have a special and very demanding approach to the Moscow Mule. But in the end, a drink tastes good if you stick to the original recipe. This way you will learn a lot about the cocktail and its basic ingredients.

But now let's get to the utensils you need for an original Moscow Mule.

The Mule Mugs (stainless steel mugs)

Not everyone knows the name Mug, but if one of these mugs is in front of you you will certainly know what it is. These cups, like the original composition of the Moscow Mule, are a marketing idea from the inventors of this drink. Stainless steel is well known for retaining cold for longer. The mug ensures that the ice cubes in the drink melt more slowly, preserving the authentic taste of the cocktail. You can also find these stylish cups in our cocktail box.

A jigger for measuring ingredients

This stylish little bar utensil is very useful for measuring ingredients precisely. Especially with drinks like the Moscow Mule, it is important that the ingredients are measured precisely. If you add a rough estimate of the lime juice, you may no longer be able to recognize the taste of the ginger beer and vodka because of the acidity.

Decorations and straws

Since we like to stick to the original recipe, you don't need any special decorations for the classic Moscow Mule. In our cocktail box you will still receive a lime that you can cut open and place on the drink. We also generally recommend using straws that you can simply wash and then reuse. With the cocktail box, for example, you get stylish stainless steel straws in the color rosé like the mugs

3. Ingredients for the Moscow Mule :

Here you can find the list of ingredients for a Moscow Mule:

  • 50 ml Smirnoff Vodka
  • 250 ml ginger beer
  • a lime
  • 15 ml lime juice
  • Ice cubes

Why Smirnoff Vodka?

We have already mentioned how the Moscow Mule came about. We owe the origin of this cocktail to the founder Smirnow of Smirnoff Vodka. It is also worth mentioning that Smirnoff is one of the gentler varieties of classic vodkas. This works well because the remaining ingredients of the Moscow Mule are more intense.

Why ginger beer?

Ginger Beer is known for its strong ginger note. There is no particular reason that this exact type of lemonade is used for this cocktail. However, the ginger beer contrasts well with the gentle and clear taste of the vodka.

Why lime and lime juice?

It was particularly important to the inventors of the Moscow Mule that the cocktail should be invigorating and sparkling. So they decided to add lime juice as an extra ingredient. In our cocktail box, however, we opted for a rather sweet lime juice so as not to overdo the acidity. The lime can only be used decoratively.

4. Recipe:

  1. Take your Moscow Mule cup or alternatively another container with a capacity of around 500 ml and place it in front of you.
  2. Now fill 15 ml of lime juice into the cup.
  3. Add 50 ml of Smirnoff Vodka.
  4. Fill the cup completely with ice
  5. Now open the ginger beer and pour 250 ml into the mug. Your mule should now be filled to the top.
  6. Cut two slices from your lime and place them on your mule.
  7. Don't forget the straws. Cheers!
